As part of my IB experience I have chosen to take Theatre HL. Despite its intimidating
reputation it was an easy decision to choose taking into consideration my passion for the
subject. Out of my six subjects I am most looking forward to taking this course due to the
fact that performing comes as second nature to me. If there is one class that I am perfectly
happy receiving large amounts of work it would be theatre.
Having been involved in Theatre and the Performing Arts in general from an early
age I have learned that it is a very accepting environment. It is the one place where one
will find it most comfortable to be them self. When in a theatre surrounded by people
with the same interests one has the opportunity to be their loudest, biggest, most
theatrical self without the risk of feeling judged. Theatre gives you the option to
be/perform whoever you want in whatever way you desire. For example, I am a dancer
and I often express my emotions through dance. It is a way that I can express myself
without words but experience the same satisfaction. Performing with emotion makes the
performance itself stronger and more powerful for those viewing, and if your alone, even
yourself. Theatre is the same in the sense that you can perform your emotions in a large,
accepting space.
I have seen too many productions to be able to list all of them. However, the most
memorable productions that I have seen would be ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Scrooge the
Musical’, ‘Cats’, ‘Lord of the Dance’ and (please excuse the irony) ‘Beauty and the
Beast’. Phantom of the Opera would be my favorite musical simply because the music
itself is amazing. Scrooge the Musical was more of a comedic musical, (obviously based
off of ‘A Christmas Carol’ by ‘Charles Dickens’) that I saw in Manchester. Cats is a
boring musical in the sense that there is no plot/conflict or even words for that matter.
However, choreographically, it is an amazing show. The dancing was absolutely
breathtaking. Lord of the Dance was a great show in terms of musicality, dancing and
story line. Without the use of words, Michael Flately created an unbelievable show.
Beauty and the Beast is very personal in the sense that both my sister and I are classic
Disney fanatics. I have been watching the movie for as long as I can remember, and I saw
the show in Manchester when I was about nine or ten. It was memorable simply because I
love the show. I did not mention this show because it happens to be our High school
Musical this year, it is just coincidental how much I happen to love classic Disney shows.
Over the next two years I am particularly looking forward to doing what I love to
do. This is the class that I am looking forward to the most and for this reason I am not
necessarily apprehensive about anything. Due to my love of the subject I am motivated to
do all of the work to the best of my ability, simply because it is enjoyable.
To conclude I am very excited about taking IBDP Theatre HL and hope to have a
lot of fun and add to my current knowledge of the subject.
